Umbrella was a subscription-based service founded in 2017 by Lindsay Ullman, Ron Byrne, and Sam Gerstenzang that connected senior citizens with pre-screened “neighbors” for household tasks such as minor repairs, tech support, and furniture assembly. The company raised $5 million from investors including BoxGroup, Maveron, and Thrive Capital before being acquired in January 2021 by ANGI Homeservices (majority-owned by IAC), the parent company of brands like Angi, HomeAdvisor, and Handy. The acquisition aimed to integrate Umbrella's consumer-focused subscription model into ANGI's broader portfolio of home services brands.
